Travel Dreams Are Better Together: Supporting a Healthy Leisure Lifestyle in Retirement

Retirement is often described as a long-awaited season of freedom. After years of working, caregiving, and planning for “someday,” many retirees finally have the time—and the financial resources—to travel. Yet, in my work as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), I frequently meet individuals who feel stuck at this very moment of possibility.
They want to explore the world.
They’ve saved and planned.
But they don’t have a close friend, partner, or loved one who is ready—or able—to embark on the same adventure.
This is where leisure lifestyle support becomes not just helpful, but essential.
Retirement, Leisure, and Well-Being
A healthy leisure lifestyle doesn’t happen by accident. Just like physical or cognitive health, leisure needs intention, encouragement, and sometimes guidance—especially during major life transitions like retirement.
Travel is more than a vacation. When thoughtfully designed, it supports:
Social connection and belonging
Cognitive stimulation and lifelong learning
Emotional wellness and joy
A renewed sense of purpose and identity
But traveling alone can feel intimidating, and waiting for “the right person” to go with often leads to missed opportunities and deferred dreams.
Why Group Travel Matters
Group travel offers retirees the chance to explore safely and confidently—without having to plan every detail or feel isolated. Traveling with others who share similar life stages and interests transforms travel into a meaningful social experience.
Travel really is more fun together.
Group travel allows participants to:
Build new friendships
Share experiences and memories
Feel supported and included
Focus on enjoyment rather than logistics
This aligns deeply with my professional calling as a CTRS: helping people engage in leisure that enhances quality of life.
A New Partnership to Support Travel Dreams
As CEO of North Star Inclusive Recreation Solutions, I am proud to share that we are now partnering with a world-renowned international tour company to help make travel more accessible, enjoyable, and inclusive for retirees.
Through this partnership, we support organizations such as:
Churches, temples, mosques and other faith-based community centers
Independent and senior living communities
Senior centers and community organizations
Together, we help design and coordinate domestic and international group trips that prioritize connection, comfort, and meaningful engagement—so participants can focus on the joy of the journey.
Your Next Chapter Can Include Adventure
Retirement doesn’t have to mean waiting on the sidelines. It can be a time of exploration, discovery, and shared experiences—with people who may start as fellow travelers and become lifelong friends.
If your organization is interested in offering a group travel experience—or if you’re an individual dreaming of seeing the world but unsure where to start—we would love to help.
Call us today to reserve a 2026 tour.
Let’s turn travel dreams into reality—together.
Because travel dreams come true… and they’re better when shared.
